Joseph DeAcetis: How would you define your idea of fashion? Could you please provide some insight into your design philosophy and what sets NB44 apart from a design perspective?

Nicolas Bijan: Fashion, to me, is a means of self-expression and individuality, enabling people to feel their best and most confident. At NB44, we see fashion as a way to impact one’s daily life and thus build lasting and meaningful relationships with our members for years and generations to come. My design philosophy is simple and ties into this directly: create looks that subtly and tastefully enable self-expression. What someone wears speaks volumes, even if they don’t realize it. I strive to understand and help communicate what the wearer wants to convey, even if it’s not clear to them what they are trying to express.

Joseph DeAcetis: Can you share the brand’s vision and design aesthetic?

Nicolas Bijan: My vision for NB44 is to offer high-quality, personalized, and unique products and services for a discerning and unique clientele. I don’t believe our members should wear pieces that can be found or bought just anywhere; they deserve garments meant to last a lifetime. This vision, paired with unparalleled personalization, the highest quality craftsmanship, and unsurpassed attention to detail in both our collections and our service, is what sets NB44 apart.

Joseph DeAcetis: Can you walk us through your design process from concept to completion? Further, how do you stay up-to-date with the latest fashion trends and incorporate them into your designs?

Nicolas Bijan: When designing a new collection, my team and I sit down and go category by category, creating seasonal collections of the highest quality to meet the style of our individual members. We use our decades of experience, our digital product—the NB44 member-exclusive app—what they’ve purchased from us in the past, what they’ve returned, and what other members with similar preferences are finding enjoyable to assist us in this design process.

I love to travel, and when I do, I observe the shopping habits and overall aesthetics of luxury brands and consumers from various markets and demographics. This ensures that my collections suit the lifestyles of a wide variety of members, from Singapore to Miami and from Silicon Valley to London.

Joseph DeAcetis: Can you tell me about the most recent collection, what you and the team learned from it, and, with all that in mind, what your aim is in moving the design philosophy forward?

Nicolas Bijan: Our recent collection was one of our best. As with past collections, the products I find both beautiful and useful are the ones our members request more of. For instance, an ultra-lightweight wool and silk outerwear piece sold out in days and prompted requests for additional pieces in the same size for multiple homes, proving that confident offerings resonate well. We treat all our pieces as limited editions, which can be frustrating for members but ultimately garners more respect for our products, which are truly art. Moving forward, we aim to continue creating unique, high-quality, and exclusive products that our members find incredibly special and equally useful.

Joseph DeAcetis: Does the team use any software/tools in the design process? What is your background/experience like when it comes to fabrics, materials, and the production process? Would love to hear a bit more about your/the team’s technical skills and how they enhance NB44’s creativity and productivity.

Nicolas Bijan: NB44 is the result of my ambition to offer superior products and services in a market with declining quality craftsmanship. We utilize innovative technologies both in our design process and when providing member services. For example, our member-exclusive mobile app uses algorithms to gather feedback and preferences, significantly influencing our collections.

Joseph DeAcetis: How would you describe your personal style?

Nicolas Bijan: I would describe my personal style as California chic. While suiting is ingrained heavily in my DNA, on the day-to-day, I tend to dress a bit more casually while doing my best to remain elegant.

Joseph DeAcetis: How do you collaborate with other industry areas, such as marketing and production, during the design process?

Nicolas Bijan: My goal with all areas of our business is to build teams that are better at what I do than I am, both in-house and with our partners. I think about that whenever we work with industry leaders outside of NB44, and I always strive to work with teams and individuals who can enhance NB44’s strengths.

Joseph DeAcetis: Can you share some of your design influences, both past and present? From an aesthetic lens, do you prefer traditional illustrating styles or newer digital mediums?

Nicolas Bijan: My father is by far my biggest design inspiration; however, unlike him, I prefer digital mediums.

Joseph DeAcetis: Can you tell our readers about any new projects coming up for NB44 and why you’re excited about them?

Nicolas Bijan: We are dressing a dear friend of mine, Miles Chamley-Watson, for his upcoming visit to the Paris Olympics, where he will compete for Team USA. This is a very impactful partnership for me because the USA gave my immigrant father the opportunity to achieve ambitions that wouldn’t have been possible anywhere else, and so being able to dress someone whose job is to represent our country is always very meaningful.
