A new survey from Yuzu, the social app fostering connections among Gen-Z Asian Americans, sheds light on how the generation is revolutionizing holiday gift-giving in the face of economic uncertainty. With rising living costs, Gen-Z is trading lavish spending for creativity and meaningful connections, offering a glimpse into the future of holiday traditions.

The survey highlights a shift toward budget-friendly and emotionally resonant gifting practices:

·       Small but Mighty: Nearly half (43.9%) of respondents opt for small, thoughtful items over extravagant gifts, prioritizing meaning over monetary value.

·       Shared Moments Over Stuff: 22.9% said they prefer giving shared experiences like movie nights or hiking trips, while 13.2% are skipping physical gifts altogether and focusing on quality time.

·       Spending Smarter: A staggering 36.9% report spending between $26 and $50 per person, with only 9.3% willing to splurge over $100.

“We’re seeing a shift in how Gen-Z approaches the holidays,” said Cindy Lim, head of brand for Yuzu. “This generation is showing us that heartfelt connections can outshine expensive gifts, redefining what it means to celebrate during tough economic times.”

 The Rise of Budget-Friendly Gifting

Gen-Z isn’t shy about setting boundaries around holiday spending:

·       Spending Limits Go Mainstream: Over 65% of respondents have set spending limits with friends or family, with 23.9% doing so every year.

·       Creative Money-Saving Hacks: 74.7% rely on shopping sales and discounts, while 40.1% gift experiences instead of physical items. DIY gifts (34.3%) and hosting potlucks or at-home gatherings (27.1%) are also gaining traction.

When asked how they show gratitude during financially challenging times, Gen-Z emphasized connection over cost:

·       44.2% say spending quality time with friends is the most meaningful way to express gratitude.
