The Origins and Evolution of Golf
Golf, one of the world’s oldest sports, originated in Scotland in the 15th century. The game was first played on the coastlines of Scotland, with players using simple sticks to hit pebbles into rabbit holes. While the exact year of its inception remains debated, golf truly took shape in 1754 when the first official rules were set by The Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St. Andrews. Over centuries, the sport evolved from a leisure pastime of Scottish aristocrats into a globally celebrated sport. Today, golf is a multi-billion-dollar industry that includes tournaments, clubs, and most significantly, golf apparel—an area that’s seen tremendous growth due to advancements in fabric technology.

Golf Apparel: A Growing Industry
Golf apparel has grown into a $1.3 billion industry globally. As players seek more than just style on the green, performance-oriented clothing that can withstand the elements has become increasingly important. Today’s golf apparel combines functionality with fashion, offering clothing that is not only weather-resistant but also comfortable and aesthetically appealing.

The Importance of High-Tech Fabrics in Golf
Tech fabrics play a crucial role in golf apparel due to the sport’s exposure to varying weather conditions. Three high-tech fabrics golfers prioritize include:

  1. Gore-Tex: Known for its waterproof and windproof qualities, Gore-Tex keeps golfers dry during rainy rounds.
  2. Dri-FIT: This moisture-wicking fabric helps golfers stay cool and comfortable, drawing sweat away from the body to regulate temperature.
  3. Polyester Spandex Blends: Combining stretch with durability, these fabrics ensure golfers have full range of motion while maintaining the form and fit of their attire.

Tech fabrics not only shield players from the elements but also enhance performance through comfort and functionality, which is why they are in high demand.

Men’s Fashion on the Golf Course
Fashion on the golf course is serious business. Golfers today care about style, and there’s a noticeable shift towards sophisticated, performance-driven apparel that balances traditional golf aesthetics with modern trends. This season, the style is clean yet athletic, incorporating sharp polos, fitted trousers, and layers that not only look good but perform well under different conditions.

Top 5 Trends in Innovative Golf Apparel

  1. Performance Polos with Stretch Technology – Offering moisture control and breathability, perfect for long games in varying conditions.
  2. Waterproof Outerwear – Jackets that combine style with waterproof technology, ensuring comfort without sacrificing movement.
  3. Sustainable Materials – Increasing demand for eco-friendly fabrics like organic cotton and recycled polyester.
  4. Multi-functional Wear – Pieces that work on and off the course, blending athletic wear with everyday fashion.
  5. Bold Colors and Patterns – Moving away from traditional pastels, more golfers are embracing vibrant hues and geometric patterns.

Billy Draddy: the creative force behind B. Draddy and Zero Restriction

Joseph DeAcetis Interview with Billy Draddy: Exploring Golf Apparel Innovation, Sustainability, and Performance

In this interview, I sit down with Billy Draddy, the creative force behind B. Draddy and Zero Restriction, to delve into the unique approaches these brands bring to golf apparel. We’ll explore the inspiration behind these labels, their commitment to balancing style with performance, and how sustainability is being integrated into their production processes. We’ll also discuss the innovative technologies used in enhancing comfort, breathability, and weather resistance, offering insight into how these brands continue to lead the way in the world of golf fashion.

Joseph DeAcetis: Can you tell me a bit about the inspiration behind B. Draddy and Zero Restriction’s approach to golf apparel? How do you balance style and performance in your designs?

Billy Draddy: B. Draddy and Zero Restriction both take unique approaches to golf apparel, but they share a common focus: blending heritage with innovation. The name “B. Draddy” stands for more than just a family name—it reflects a guiding principle, “Brothers Draddy.” Our inspiration is rooted in a timeless, aristocratic-bohemian aesthetic, drawing from past icons while utilizing cutting-edge fabric construction and finishing techniques. We aim to capture a sense of elegance with naturally aged colors and fabrics, often inspired by the salt of the ocean, creating pieces that are handsome, comfortable, and built to last.

Zero Restriction, on the other hand, was born in a simple shed in rural Pennsylvania with a clear goal—to pioneer waterproof golf outerwear that offered complete freedom of movement. This approach revolutionized the sport, with professional golfers quickly recognizing the advantage. Today, we’ve expanded into a full range of men’s and women’s athletic apparel, but the core philosophy remains: pushing the boundaries of performance while maintaining the highest quality standards. For both brands, balancing style and performance comes naturally. We craft apparel that not only looks great but also performs at the highest level, allowing athletes and enthusiasts alike to enjoy the game in any condition.

Joseph DeAcetis: How are B. Draddy and Zero Restriction incorporating sustainability into their production processes and materials?

Billy Draddy: B. Draddy, while not founded on the premise of sustainability, has always been one of the most sustainable golf sportswear brands out there. The foundation of our line is in cotton and natural fibers like cashmere, merino wool, and alpaca—all of which are the most sustainable fibers that you can use in any apparel production. We fully believe in sustainability and inherently have been sustainable since day one. With that said, we also have performance products in the line, and this extends to Zero Restriction too, where we are moving towards sustainability in the performance arena as technology advances. When we can, we use recyclable fibers, and as technology moves more towards sustainability being aligned with performance, we will move in that direction.

Joseph DeAcetis: What technologies or fabric advancements are you using to enhance comfort, breathability, and weather resistance?

Billy Draddy: Comfort in Draddy—one of the technologies that we took advantage of was plying spandex with natural fibers. Our core fabrication, which is a cotton spandex, is different from previous cotton fabrics in that the spandex allows you to use a finer cotton and gives it greater memory and greater wash and wearability.

Zero Restriction is a leader in three-layer waterproof garments. What three-layer waterproof garments allow you to do is utilize a breathable membrane between two water-resistant fabrics, which allows vapor from your body to pass out while prohibiting water from the environment to pass in. This three-layer technology really enhances the breathability of our garments, making them superior in terms of comfort and performance.

Joseph DeAcetis: How does your apparel hold up in terms of durability and care? Could you walk us through how it wears and washes over time?

Billy Draddy: For Zero Restriction, all waterproof fabric is treated with a Durable Water Repellent (DWR) coating that causes water to bead up on its surface. This prevents the outer fabric from becoming saturated while ensuring the garment remains breathable. Maintaining breathability is key to keeping you dry, and we provide care tips to ensure our gear lasts a long time.

For B. Draddy, we use superior raw materials like organic Peruvian Pima cotton, which gets softer with wear. Our garments are naturally breathable and easy to care for, designed to improve with time.

Joseph DeAcetis: Where are B. Draddy and Zero Restriction products manufactured, and how do you ensure the quality of your production?

Billy Draddy: We use factories with whom we’ve built long-standing relationships. For B. Draddy, our core factories have been with us for over 20 years. We have a shared covenant of quality that ensures consistency across every product. As we expand to new factories, we bring them on slowly to ensure they meet our standards, ensuring that our quality remains uncompromised.

Joseph DeAcetis: Who is the core demographic for B. Draddy and Zero Restriction? How do you cater to both the dedicated golfer and the casual player?

Billy Draddy: The core demographic for B. Draddy is someone who is attracted to quality and appreciates natural fibers. They seek innovation in a timeless style. Zero Restriction appeals to those who demand top-tier performance apparel. We don’t cater to either demographic specifically; instead, we create versatile clothes that work on the golf course and in everyday life.

Joseph DeAcetis: From a design standpoint, how do you ensure that your collections balance classic golf style with modern athletic wear?

Billy Draddy: Our goal has always been to create golf apparel that performs exceptionally well on the course while maintaining the comfort and style needed off the course. In 2013, we set out to innovate with fabric, creating shirts that allowed for breathability, moisture-wicking, and comfort, all while maintaining a timeless, classic look. We set a new standard, and both golfers and non-golfers appreciate our commitment to balance and quality.

Joseph DeAcetis: What makes B. Draddy and Zero Restriction apparel the perfect gift for golf enthusiasts during the holiday season?

Billy Draddy: Both brands offer high-quality, versatile apparel. Zero Restriction specializes in technical performance gear that helps you battle the elements, while B. Draddy is known for super comfortable and stylish pieces that work on and off the golf course. They’re the perfect gift for any golf enthusiast looking for apparel that stands the test of time.

Joseph DeAcetis: Looking forward, what can we expect from B. Draddy and Zero Restriction in terms of new innovations and future collections?

Billy Draddy: We’re excited about expanding into new categories like footwear and accessories. While it’s difficult to enter those markets alone, we’re interested in collaborating with established manufacturers. In terms of future products, we’ll continue to grow as a sportswear brand, and you can expect new categories like socks, sport coats, and neckwear coming from us in the future.

Conclusion
Golf apparel has evolved alongside the sport itself, with brands like B. Draddy and Zero Restriction leading the charge in balancing fashion, performance, and sustainability. Golfers take their apparel seriously, and today’s high-tech, stylish options reflect that dedication. As the sport continues to grow, so too will the demand for innovative apparel that meets the needs of the modern golfer.
