Canada’s Ascendancy in Global Fashion: A Celebration of Craftsmanship and Innovation
Canada, renowned for its breathtaking landscapes and rich multicultural fabric, has firmly established itself as a formidable player in the global fashion arena. Over the years, Canadian fashion brands have transcended domestic boundaries, garnering significant recognition in the United States and beyond. With a commitment to high quality, sustainability, and innovative design, these brands have positioned Canada as an emerging fashion hub. As we explore the nuances of Canada’s fashion industry, we will delve into its historical roots, its impressive economic footprint, and spotlight one of its premier luxury brands, SHAN—a beacon of Canadian craftsmanship and global elegance.
The Global Breakthrough of Canadian Fashion
When envisioning the fashion capitals of the world, one often conjures images of Paris, Milan, and New York. Yet, Canadian designers have successfully carved out a unique niche on the international stage. Brands such as Roots, Smythe, and Mackage have experienced monumental success beyond Canada’s borders, particularly in the U.S. These brands embody a harmonious blend of practicality and luxury, resonating with global audiences while earning accolades for their unwavering commitment to sustainability and premium materials.
At the forefront of Canadian excellence is SHAN, a luxury swimwear and resort wear brand that has flourished on the international stage. Before we delve into the story of SHAN, it is essential to appreciate the broader historical context of Canadian fashion.
The Origins of Canadian Fashion: A Legacy of Craftsmanship
The Canadian fashion industry’s roots extend back to the Hudson’s Bay Company, founded in 1670 as Canada’s first apparel entity. Originally a fur trading enterprise, Hudson’s Bay evolved into a leading retailer, marking a pivotal moment in Canadian fashion history. However, it wasn’t until much later that the nation began to forge a distinct fashion identity.
Today, Canada’s fashion industry stands as a multibillion-dollar sector. Recent reports indicate that the fashion and apparel market in Canada generated over $25 billion in revenue, with a growing emphasis on sustainability and ethical production. This thriving industry continues to expand its global influence, propelled by iconic Canadian brands such as SHAN.
SHAN: A Canadian Icon in Global Luxury Fashion
Founded in 1985 by designer Chantal Levesque in Laval, Quebec, SHAN began its journey as a luxury swimwear label. Over the decades, the brand has evolved to encompass resort wear, ready-to-wear collections, and exclusive collaborations. What sets SHAN apart is its unwavering dedication to Canadian craftsmanship, paired with a commitment to creating designs that are both elegant and practical.
SHAN’s philosophy strikes a delicate balance between tradition and innovation. The brand draws inspiration from Canada’s diverse cultural heritage while embracing global trends. This duality is palpable in every piece, where meticulous craftsmanship meets avant-garde design. As Chantal Levesque aptly states, “High-quality materials are the foundation of SHAN. We work closely with some of the best suppliers in the world, and the creative process always begins with the material.” This dedication to quality resonates in every stitch, cut, and fabric choice, ensuring that comfort never takes a backseat to style.
A Memorable Visit to SHAN East Hampton: Style, Elegance, and Expert Guidance
During my summer visit to East Hampton in 2024, I had the distinct pleasure of experiencing the SHAN Boutique, where I was warmly greeted by Lydia Karras, the boutique’s director. From the moment I entered, I was captivated by the meticulously curated displays showcasing SHAN’s luxurious offerings, each arranged with an elegance that set the tone for an exceptional experience. Lydia’s passion for fashion was evident from our first interaction—her infectious enthusiasm and keen sense of style instantly captured the attention of both myself and my models. Her vibrant charisma and expert eye for detail solidified her status as a true connoisseur of fashion.
Beyond her personable nature, Lydia took the time to illuminate the intricacies of SHAN’s designs, sharing her extensive knowledge of the materials and craftsmanship behind each piece. This thoughtful approach afforded us a comprehensive understanding of the brand’s ethos. Of all the boutiques I visited in East Hampton, SHAN stood out not only for its exquisite selection but also for the welcoming atmosphere that Lydia cultivated. The combination of refined product curation and our personal connection made the experience truly memorable, leaving me thoroughly impressed by both the boutique and its remarkable director.

During my visit to the East Hampton SHAN store, I was struck by the meticulous attention to detail in each garment. The fabrics are carefully selected—luxurious, breathable, and durable. SHAN’s swimwear collection, for instance, features bold hues and oversized cover-ups that exude sophistication. Upon entering one of their boutiques, you immediately sense the brand’s capacity to seamlessly merge luxury with practicality.
The East Hampton store experience reflects SHAN’s global appeal, which now spans across 15 stores worldwide, including locations in New York, Miami, and Paris. The ambiance, customer service, and personal touches woven into the retail experience embody the brand’s commitment to excellence.
The Designer Behind the Brand: Chantal Levesque
Chantal Levesque is more than just a designer; she is a visionary who has upheld SHAN’s status as a leader in swimwear and resort wear for nearly four decades. Her approach to fashion is grounded in the belief that clothing should empower individuals to feel confident and beautiful, a sentiment echoed by SHAN’s loyal clientele. Chantal’s ability to harmonize innovation with traditional craftsmanship distinguishes SHAN from other luxury brands.
Sustainability is another core tenet of the brand, embraced long before it became a buzzword in the fashion industry. As Chantal articulates, “Sustainability has always been at the heart of SHAN. It’s not merely about using eco-friendly materials; it’s about ensuring that each piece is crafted to last.”

Joseph DeAcetis: How does SHAN’s Canadian heritage influence the design of your swimwear and resort collections?
Chantal Levesque: We Canadians are a very inclusive society that encourages diversity. I think we are influenced a bit being Canadians; we design products in a way so no one feels left out, in terms of styles and sizing. We often hear our clients say that “when they wear our products, it makes them feel good about themselves.” To us, this is everything.
Joseph DeAcetis: What role do high-quality materials play in developing your elegant and functional garments?
Chantal Levesque: High-quality materials are at the very foundation of the development of our garments. We work closely with some of the best suppliers in the world. For SHAN, the design of a collection starts with the materials—it is the most important aspect in the early stages of the creative process.
Joseph DeAcetis: How does SHAN balance tradition and innovation in its designs?
Chantal Levesque: Whenever we design a collection, we always take a look at what we have done in the past. We keep a physical copy of every garment we’ve ever created at our head office, and we often go back in time to take old templates and give them a modern twist. Innovating with new materials or updating them with new trends that we love.
Joseph DeAcetis: Can you explain the significance of balancing comfort with style in both your swimwear and ready-to-wear collections?
Chantal Levesque: We have always been about comfort; we feel that without comfort, style makes no sense. It’s always challenging to design a garment that will be as comfortable as it looks good. I think a large part of making this possible is with comfortable fabrics and having the right fit. We work a lot on the fit of every piece and on the sizing so that people can feel as comfortable as possible in our products.
Joseph DeAcetis: What are the key trends in luxury resort wear for 2024?
Chantal Levesque: Bold and vibrant colors and patterns: We see a lot of bright, vibrant hues for 2024 as well as bold prints with eye-catching patterns.
Relaxed, oversized fits: Especially in resort wear/ready-to-wear, we see a lot of loose cover-ups, oversized shirts, and flared pants. It creates an interesting volume that’s exciting to style.
Sustainability: It’s becoming more and more important to consumers to shop eco-friendly and find brands that respect certain sustainability standards.
Joseph DeAcetis: How has the growing demand for sustainable fashion influenced your product development?
Chantal Levesque: I’m glad that you mentioned sustainability. As it turns out, we have always been very focused on sustainability since the very beginning, even back when people didn’t really care about it. In other words, that growing demand in sustainability didn’t influence much in the way we develop our product; it’s just the way we’ve always done things.
Joseph DeAcetis: How does Canadian craftsmanship influence your manufacturing process?
Chantal Levesque: It’s at the very foundation of the brand’s values. It is a huge challenge for us to manufacture every product in Canada, but we are ready to accept those challenges to stay aligned with our values.
SHAN’s Global Journey and Canadian Pride
The way I see it, SHAN exemplifies the very best of Canadian fashion—where high-quality craftsmanship, attention to detail, and luxury meet. As a brand, it not only represents Canadian culture but also the globalized future of fashion. My time at the East Hampton store further solidified my admiration for SHAN’s dedication to both its heritage and its innovative spirit.
Whether you’re drawn to its luxurious fabrics, impeccable fit, or timeless design, SHAN’s collections offer more than just clothing; they offer a transformative experience that embodies the elegance of Canadian craftsmanship. As we look ahead, SHAN is well-positioned to continue redefining luxury fashion, not just in Canada, but on the world stage.
With brands like SHAN leading the charge, Canada’s fashion industry will undoubtedly continue its ascent, bringing with it a rich legacy of innovation and a promising future.
