Interview with Darren Bloch, CEO and Executive Director of Greenwich House

In this exclusive interview, Joseph DeAcetis sits down with Darren Bloch, CEO and Executive Director of Greenwich House, to discuss the legacy and impact of the 22nd annual “Taste of Greenwich Village” event. They delve into the event’s evolution from a small community gathering to a premier culinary celebration, the significance of hosting socially responsive events that unite and support the community, and the exciting new additions and special touches that made the 2024 event the best one yet. Join us as we explore how Greenwich House continues to foster wellness, creativity, and connection in New York City through this beloved annual tradition.

Joseph DeAcetis:  Darren, it’s incredible to see “Taste of Greenwich Village” return for its 22nd year. Can you talk to us about the legacy of this event?

Darren Bloch: Absolutely. “Taste of Greenwich Village” started as an energetic coming-together of our community in our 6th-floor gym, with a handful of friendly local restaurants. Over the years, it has evolved into a premier event among a growing circuit of these “smorgasbords-for-good.” Each of these events brings a fun variation on the format, but for us, it’s a unique opportunity to thank our community of supporters and rally more people to our cause. With the help of more than 20 of our city’s top chefs, we create an unforgettable evening that truly embodies the spirit of Greenwich House.

Joseph DeAcetis: In your words, what is your aim in hosting a socially responsive event like this?

Darren Bloch: Our aim is twofold. Firstly, we want to introduce people to Greenwich House and the work we do with 22,000 neighbors each year. This event brings together friends, partners, and supporters to celebrate the diverse communities we nurture and build. Secondly, it’s about showcasing the generous spirit of the city’s best chefs, who donate their time, resources, and talent to support our programs and services. Their participation is a deeply social response to our mission, allowing us to bring neighbors together and support our work in fostering wellness, creativity, and connection across the city.

FERDI:

Joseph DeAcetis:  Why do you believe that the 2024 “Taste of Greenwich Village” event was better than ever before?

Darren Bloch: This year was exceptional because we partnered with several new chefs from incredible restaurants, such as Iron Chef winner Marc Forgione’s One Fifth Trattoria and Chef Jean-Georges’ Perry Street. We also welcomed back favorites like the Blackfoot Hospitality family: Little Owl, Market Table, The Mary Lane, and The Clam. Our lineup of 20 restaurants was one of the largest and most diverse groups we’ve ever hosted. The variety and quality of food were outstanding, and it was wonderful to see such a vibrant mix of old friends and new faces.

Joseph DeAcetis:  What inspired you in organizing this year’s event?

Darren Bloch: With it being our 22nd year, we wanted to ensure the event felt like a true celebration. To spice things up, we brought on DJ Stormin’ Norman, founder of Harlem’s Sundae Sermon festival, to keep the energy high with a vibrant mix of music. His set included original tracks by artists-in-residence from the Greenwich House Music School’s Uncharted Concert Series. Additionally, we wanted to be inclusive and supportive of our neighbors who are sober or in recovery. We offered a special mocktail and provided information about behavioral health services from our Center for Healing. It was important for us to create an atmosphere that was festive, inclusive, and supportive of our entire community.

As the night came to a close, it was clear that the 22nd annual “Taste of Greenwich Village” was a resounding success. The event not only showcased the culinary diversity of Lower Manhattan but also highlighted the enduring spirit of community and generosity that Greenwich House embodies. With each bite and each toast, the attendees celebrated not just the flavors of the city, but the shared mission of fostering a thriving, connected community.
